This page summarises various prices for the DND/PF setting.

Gold

One gold piece is 1/50 pound (0.009071847 kg / 9.071847 g).

For simplicity, we just count all change below gold as fractions of gold, and then keep track of platinum. For those that keep proper track: kudos.

I once read (but don't remember the source) that the price of a "mug" (glass, can) of beer (ale, mead) has stayed relatively stable throughout history. Using this information, and the knowledge that a mug of ale is listed as costing 1 sp, this places the purchasing power of a single gold piece at around $60. You can use this information to determine how much gold should be impressive.

It's worth noting that d20 modern used a conversion of rate of 1 gp to $20.

  • An unskilled laborer makes 2sp/day, or 1.4gp per week, and has to spend all of it to maintain a Poor lifestyle. A mere 50gp (the price of a single healing potion) is the equivalent of an entire year's pay at "minimum wage".
  • A skilled laborer, such as a village blacksmith or paid guard, makes 1gp per day, or 7gp a week. To this man, 50gp is nearly two month's wages, nothing to sneeze at certainly, and 360gp is full year's pay - just enough to keep him in a modest lifestyle.
  • For 730gp, a character can live comfortably, if not extravagantly, for one solid year without having to work at all.
  • For 1,460gp, a character can not only be comfortable all year long, but enjoy some of the minor luxuries of wealth, such as a handmaid or butler, and finer clothing
  • The sum of 3,650gp will buy you a year of fantasy - servants at your beck and call, luxurious accommodations, the finest fashions, and marvelous feasts are all yours with no further work required on your part.
